Some people may wonder why procrastination advice seems to never work for them and if there is a deeper issue at hand. Well, for 20 percent of the population who are chronic procrastinators, it is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, according to Joseph Ferrari, a psychology professor at DePaul University and a leading expert in the study of procrastination. For those 20 percent, telling them to just “do it” is like “telling a clinically depressed person to cheer up,” says Ferrari, author of the book Still Procrastinating?

It’s a serious problem if . . .

So how do you know if you’re a chronic procrastinator? “You find that you procrastinate at home, at school, at work, in relationships. You don’t pay your bills on time . . . You miss sporting events, concerts because you never got the ticket,” says Ferrari. “You’re late for any social gathering, you’ll miss doctor’s appointments because you’re never there on time, the refrigerator is empty because you never restock it in time, food goes bad because you never eat it on time. If you do all those kind of things, you probably are a chronic procrastinator.”

Read on to find out how people become procrastinators.

How people become chronic procrastinators

There are several factors that can lead one to becoming a chronic procrastinator. Here are a couple of them, according to the procrastination expert:
•Your dad: “It’s typically cold, demanding stern fathers that cause boys and girls to be procrastinators,” Ferrari says. Children with strict dads use procrastination as a way to cope because they can’t rebel.
•You care too much about what others think of you: Some people procrastinate because they care too much about what others think. The pressure to seem perfect is particularly strong for these people. The chronic procrastinators prefer people to see them as procrastinators that don’t get around to doing tasks rather than simply being incompetent.
•Society: We live in a world where society doesn’t reward punctuality. Instead, we’re penalized for being late, which doesn’t give any of us incentive to complete tasks ahead of time. “We punish people if they file their taxes late. We give them a bill. If we pay off our credit card late, we charge them a late fee. But what if you pay your card on time and what if you’ve paid your mortgage off? There’s no gift here.”

The cure for procrastination

For those who have deep-rooted issues with procrastination, it seems that cognitive behavioral therapy, a type of mental health counseling, is the most effective method. This type of psychotherapy attempts to reroute inaccurate, harmful, or negative thoughts.

Ferrari suggests a couple more ways that might help chronic procrastinators:
•Surround yourself with doers: It’s healthy for a chronic procrastinator to surround herself with people who are likely to do things. It’ll likely be a good influence for those with a tendency to delay tasks.
•Just start somewhere: Just take a small step at a time. For example, if you’re supposed to write an essay, start with a few paragraphs, and if that’s too much for you, resolve to write just one. If that’s still overwhelming, stick to a couple of sentences or even a few words.
•Set up a reward system: “People like to do things they enjoy doing,” says Ferrari. He recommends rewarding yourself with something you enjoy after you complete something that you’ve been dreading to do. For example, reward yourself with half an hour of Desperate Housewives after doing laundry.
•Public posting: Because procrastinators care so much about how others view them, they are more likely to do tasks when they publicly announce it. Take to Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media outlet and state the task you’re going to do. Then when you’ve completed it, let everyone know that you’ve done what you set out to do. The “likes” and congratulatory tweets will feel very satisfying.

So what if I am one?
If you’re reading this and feel that you fit the profile of a chronic procrastinator, you may think that it’s not a big deal to be one. After all, your life might be functioning fine, and you’ve made it through many of the setbacks caused by your procrastination. However, keep in mind that it may catch up with you one day, and it can get to a point where it disrupts your life and negatively impact other people’s opinion of your character. It’s not exactly comfortable living as a chronic procrastinator. In fact, Ferrari found that procrastinators have more regrets than nonprocrastinators for things that they didn’t do. “Stop stressing yourself over it. Life is short — leave a legacy. There are too many places to see and too many things to do in life to just procrastinate and wait and living in a bubble of fear of getting it done,” says Ferrari.

My Dream Job.

I have recently been attending a school for people trying to get a job that will help you in updating your resume, teach you how to do cover letters and broadcast letters and show you all the in and outs of interviewing. I did a similar thing in high school but this was so high standard! This woman knew all the answer’s, I guess that would be why she gets paid 30 an hour!!! I have a resume all done, cover letters and a broadcast letter done. I have been busting my butt from 8-5 for the past 3 weeks and now we all sticking together, are job searching. I have found the DREAM JOB! I can not believe it is open but there are actually two, one at Michael’s and one at ACMoore, for Floral Design. I have applied, sent my resumes and am now just giving the proper amount of time to pass before I call and start to bug people to hire me. I really have to say that I would be in heaven if I got one of these two positions.

Four days ago, when I entered the flower shop, one goal was to find white tulips to photograph.  I finally selected a bouquet that looked mostly white with just a few petals here and there laced with pink.  I figured that was okay.

But as the tulips  sat in the kitchen window bathed in sunlight, more and more pink appeared across all of the flowery surfaces.

At first I was a bit chagrined.  You see, my last experience with pink tulips had been fun but I really had been trying to photograph something different.  Luckily, one of my mottoes in this life is “go with the flow.”  😉

Today, I noticed that the tulips had more fully opened revealing once more that interior beauty.

I really don’t have a flower budget, so I am not sure how many more bouquets of non-pink tulips I will try to buy.  But I’ll…

Art Repurposed … Beautifully

For a while, if you visit The Shop at Trinity Church in Copley Square, Boston, and wander over to the children’s section, you will see an array of paper cranes dangling from the ceiling…

… like a wave of birds in flight …

… colors bright and warm …

… shadows cast upon the ceiling in the wavering lights.

The birds were made by Anulfo Baez, a guest contributor on this site before.  Upon learning that Shop staff were contemplating a new window display involving birds, he donated his origami creations.  Several hundred in number, he had originally intended to make 1,000.  Do you know the lore surrounding One Thousand Cranes?

Even if you do know, read Anulfo’s story, One Thousand Paper Cranes for Japan.  While he did not reach his original goal, I think what he did create will bring a bit of brightness and joy into the…

MYBOYS KEEP ME ALIVE!

I wake up everyday trying to think positive, trying to remember that my day will come. I am 37, have many undiagnosed medical issues and am on welfare. The state of MAINE gives me 585.00 to live on a month along with food stamps and mainecare. The rent for my apartment which is in the worst part of town is still 700.I live as cheap as I can possibly do. My phone is 40.00 a month. My electric runs about 60. and we currently have cable with internet for 65. month set for 2 years. I also have 36.61 for car insurance and of course the regular necessities for living. I use all the programs I qualify for and try to make money anytime I can. I quit smoking, I don’t drink and I do not go out anywhere unless I need to so I save on gas. If I am lucky I get child support for one of my boys but that is not very often. Besides the undiagnosed issues I have some that have been named and am on many medications. I have a co-pay that I am supposed to pay but charge as much as I can because I can not pay it. I struggle to remember to make my kids do their homework and do their chores everyday. It seems my life is a constant battle but, my kids are worth it. No matter how down I get and how much I wish I could just give up I know that I can not. I could not imagine how that would just devastate my kids. I am all that they have and they are all that I have.I do not know anyone else who knows that everything you do and everything you say to your kids as they grow forms the adults they become. I want my kids to grow to be healthy, happy adults living full adult lives not children living adult lives trying to compensate what they feel they missed out on as kids. I just hate that my kids have to suffer for things they had nothing to do with. They did not ask to be brought in to this world and they did not ask to have a mother who can not care for them properly. I give my kids all of me on a daily basis. I could not imagine what my life would be like with out my inspiration to live, my two boys. I may not agree with most of the cards I have been dealt in this world but I would not trade my boys for all the money in the world, or, not to be sick a day in my life. My boys are my life.

SELFISH DRIVERS

I was driving up the main avenue yesterday noticing the major traffic for the time of day. As I stop at a light the truck in front of me moves in just the right way so I can see way up the road and I notice the blue lights and a car off to the side in front of McDonald’s.  Other drivers see the lights and are slowly merging over to the left lane were I already was so I slowed and let the last two cars move over in front of me. As I watch and start to see the situation unfold a little blue car speeds past me on the right in the empty lane. I immediately start to curse the little car and woman who is driving. I hate when people do that, they have no consideration for the people who have sat there waiting patently in line as they should have. I start wishing I could get out of my vehicle and run up to the front of the line and tell people not to let her in,make her wait as we all have untill her turn!I see a few cars not letting her in and I hope it lasts, but it doesn’t. I hate it when people are selfish and inconsiderate to others in traffic and I want to say, WAIT YOUR TURN!
